Memory and/in Practice

Memory and/in Practice

Postgraduate Seminar in Cultural Memory Studies

Organized by Centre for the Study of Cultural Memory, University of London, and Danish Network for Cultural Memory Studies

When: June 3-4, 2011

Where: University of Copenhagen

This interdisciplinary seminar aims to create a forum for postgraduates (MA and PhD) and early stage researchers in cultural memory studies from the UK and Denmark. The forum will consist of focused and creative sessions designed to facilitate the discussion of different models, methodological practices, and theoretical approaches to the study of cultural memory in all its varied forms (literary, visual, cultural, social, political...). Participants will have the opportunity to present their research projects and case studies and thereby engage in a process of fruitful dialogue and exchange.

Special attention will be paid to the notion of practice - both the practice of cultural memory as applied to the different case studies being presented, and within the broader context of the development and evolution of cultural memory studies today.

For the first seminar, participants are invited to present their projects and contextualize them within the broad horizon of contemporary cultural memory studies. In addition, there will be talks on key topics and reading groups on seminal texts in the field. A special artist-led workshop will address a variety of practices in the research of cultural memory through experimentation with various forms of documentation, organization and presentation of research.

The seminar will take place over two days in Copenhagen. The Danish Network for Cultural Memory Studies will sponsor accommodation costs for non-resident participants.
